From SR International:

"any changes to the constitution have to be decided on by two consecutive parliaments with an election in between"

That really impresses me. It's probably extremely difficult to write stupid morality legislation into a constitution with that system. I also like the idea that it's impossible to rush through fundamental changes.

Particle Physics and Inflationary Cosmology

This is the LaTeX version of my book "Particle Physics and Inflationary Cosmology'' (Harwood, Chur, Switzerland, 1990). I decided to put it to hep-th, to make it easily available. Many things happened during the 15 years since the time when it was written. In particular, we have learned a lot about the high temperature behavior in the electroweak theory and about baryogenesis. A discovery of the acceleration of the universe has changed the way we are thinking about the problem of the vacuum energy: Instead of trying to explain why it is zero, we are trying to understand why it is anomalously small. Recent cosmological observations have shown that the universe is flat, or almost exactly flat, and confirmed many other predictions of inflationary theory. Many new versions of this theory have been developed, including hybrid inflation and inflationary models based on string theory. There was a substantial progress in the...

Towards sustainable and optimum populations

  1. Assuming the global biocapacity and average footprint [F1] remain stable at the 2003 level, then, to become sustainable, the world population needs to contract to a maximum of 5.1 billion.
  2. For a "modest" world footprint of 3.3 gha/cap (without allowances for biodiversity or change of biocapacity), the sustainable population is 3.4 billion.
  3. For a "modest" world footprint of 3.3 gha/cap, plus a 12% allowance for biodiversity (but none for attrition of biocapacity), the sustainable population is 3.0 billion.
  4. For a "modest" world footprint of 3.3 gha/cap, plus a 20% margin for biodiversity and attrition of biocapacity then the sustainable population is 2.7 billion.

Optimum Human Population Size

To summarize this brief essay, determination of an "optimum" world population size involves social decisions about the life styles to be lived and the distribution of...

From the Financial Times:

Camel demand soars in India

As the cost of running gas-guzzling tractors soars, even-toed ungulates are making a comeback, raising hopes that a fall in the population of the desert state's signature animal can be reversed.

I don't think the horse is going to be replacing the automobile any time soon, and it's the kind of solution you'd never see implemented in the midwest on agrindustrial factory farms, but part of me thinks that's really cool anyway. Maybe elephants can get the same kind of boost too. I also think it's more than a little worrisome that in places already on the verge of a food crisis, oil costs are a barrier to being able to use the most modern tools available in food production.

(Thanks, Callipygous.)

The Bloggis RSS feed encodes the email address as username@bloggis.se, which means that FeedBurner thinks that it can send you email and includes the "Email the Author" link if you select it under FeedFlare options. From the FeedBurner page: "Allow subscribers to email you directly using a web-based form FeedBurner provides. (If there is no author email address encoded in your feed, this Flare does not display.)" You can manually enable or disable the link in FeedBurner's control panel, but there is no way to change the email address that appears in the RSS feed, either via Bloggis or FeedBurner.

See my FeedBurner Feed to see what I mean. I tried setting my email address as visible to logged in users, but that doesn't seem to make a difference in the address that is used in the feed. I do understand why people might not want their actual email address included in the RSS feed by default,...
