The Google Killer
Cuil (pronounced "cool" as an exercise in non-intuitive web 2.0 language) is being touted as the challenger to the Google search throne.
My impression? Not so much.
Not that I think Google is any great shakes lately. More and more I find that, while it used to give me what I needed, lately it is becoming irrelevant. Too much spam, too many websites that are really just product placement, but they are full of fancy SEO tricks to make Google like them.
In short: Google is jammed full of cruft.
It's going to be a while before Cuil can really compete. I've gotten used to the simplicity of Google. I'm not really caring for the images loading with my search results. It takes too long for the page of results to load, and when I've finished the text I want to move on. They need either a margin at the bottom of the page, or else to put next page links at the top of the results because the ones on the bottom are at the very bottom of my screen and effectively blocked by my progress bar when the page isn't fully loaded. (You can just see their little blue tops peeking up over where it says "Document.")
And if you check out that screenshot, it takes a while for Cuil results to load, thanks to those images. I wonder if they underestimated the bandwidth they need, because that's hella slow.
And currently, you only get one page of results. At least I only get one page. When I click the "next page" button, it tells me my search has no results. Even though the first page of results assured me that there were something in the range of eighteen thousand.
